In 2005 Burkina Faso qualified for the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA), a new instrument of US development cooperation. This new instrument is characterized by particularly strict but transparent award conditions. In this regard, the qualification for Burkina Faso brings a good reputation on the international level.
Multilateral Organizations
According to physicscat, Burkina Faso has been participating in the NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa’s Development) process since 2001, a development program of the African Union in which African states commit themselves to ownership, transparency and accountability. Cord Jakobeit drew an interim balance after five years at NEPAD.
The EU is supporting Burkina Faso from 2014 to 2020 with 623 million euros.
Other important partners in multilateral development cooperation are:
- African Development Bank
- BOAD
- World bank
- IMF
- UNICEF
- UNDP (PNUD)
- IFAD
- FAO
Non-governmental development cooperation
Some larger professional aid organizations run projects in Burkina Faso. They include:
- World hunger Help
- Help
- OXFAM
- PLAN INTERNATIONAL
Non-governmental initiatives, which are financed by donations and grants and whose sponsors are volunteers, also cooperate on a grass-roots basis and with an incomparably efficient cost-benefit ratio. They focus on human encounters.
In German-speaking countries there are more than 200 partnerships between groups, associations, places or schools with those in Burkina Faso. The best known is the more than 20 year old initiative of Katrin Rohde : Sahel eV.. With her association AMPO, the former bookseller from Plön, ” Mama Tenga “, has several places of refuge, training, work and living in Ouagadougou and the surrounding area Orphans, street children, the disabled and young people who cannot be accommodated by existing social networks were created. The Katrin Rohde Foundation has ensured the sustainability of the facilities for ten years.
The work of the ” Solidarity Circle West Africa ” under the direction of notary “Charly” Simonis is impressive because of the enormous number of school buildings that arose from his private initiative.
The associations ” FATHIMA eV ” based in Bad Honnef and Kinderhilfe-Westafrika eV in Thuringia specifically support the education of girls in Burkina Faso.
Some other initiatives are:
- TIKATO – Bread for the World working group (for 40 years in Wetzlar)
- Against NOMA eV
- SEWA eV (solar technology)
- City partnership Lahnstein – Ouahigouya
- Partnership association Garango – Ladenburg eV

The German- Burkinabe Friendship Society (DBFG) continuously updates a list of associations, organizations and other groups that deal with Burkina Faso in Germany and shows their locations in Germany and Burkina Faso on maps.
Precisely because of their closeness to the grassroots, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are required to be highly sensitive and understand the foreign mentality, especially since private development aid stands and falls with the reliability of the local partners. Naive lack of need, which does not think beyond one’s own standards and goodwill, often leads to disappointment and abandonment.
