According to fun-wiki, the state of North Carolina, also known as Tar Heel State, was one of the original thirteen states that founded the Union and fought to free themselves from British colonial rule. During your North Carolina holiday you will enjoy the beautiful nature and the rich history of the American Indians.
Great Smokey Mountains
The Great Smokey Mountains are a mountain range in the southern Appalachians, on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee . The highest point in the park is Clingmans Dome, which is 2025 meters high. The name comes from the mist that often hangs over the tops of the mountains. This is a beautiful natural phenomenon that you cannot miss during your North Carolina vacation. A large part of the mountain range is protected, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Smokey Mountains is America’s most visited park. It is a park that reveals its secrets by walking. If you visit the Great Smokey Mountains during your North Carolina vacation, it is definitely recommended to follow a hiking route.
The Outer Banks
The Outer Banks form a kind of crescent around the coast of North Carolina. The coastline is 180 km long and runs from the state line with Virginia to Cape Lookout. The area can be compared to our Wadden Sea, with an outer row of sandbanks and rows of dunes, whether or not connected to the marshy hinterland with salt marshes. A portion of the Outer Banks are built up with vacation homes. It is a beautiful nature reserve with beautiful beaches, sand dunes, game reserves and lighthouses. Great to relax during your North Carolina vacation.
History
The original inhabitants of North Carolina were American Indians, including the Cherokee. Around 1830 they were forced to move to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma. South Carolina was a slave state par excellence and the first state to secede from the Union, sparking the American Civil War. North Carolina did not secede until all of its neighbors did, and reluctantly in 1861. Near the village of Kitty Hawk, the first piloted flight was made in 1903 in a powered aircraft made by the Wright brothers.
Geography
The state is very interesting in terms of nature. On the east side are the beautiful Outerbanks, a row of islands off the coast, somewhat comparable to our Wadden Islands. To the west are the Great Smokey Mountains, which resemble the Ardennes or Vosges, although they are quite inaccessible in places. In between is a hilly landscape that is quite heavily wooded. The climate is hot and humid in summer with temperatures hovering around 35-37 degrees.
