It consists of two small towns, Kalaupapa and Kalawao, along with a handful of rural villages. The county is home to around 500 people and is primarily agricultural in nature. Kalawao County is served by the Kalawao County Department of Education (KCDE), which oversees the educational needs of all students in the county from kindergarten through 12th grade. KCDE operates three public schools; one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. The elementary and middle schools are both located in Kalaupapa and serve students from grades K-8. Overall, Kalawao County provides its residents with an excellent educational system that strives to meet each student’s needs while preparing them for their future endeavors in higher education or workforce opportunities upon graduation from any one of its schools.
