Hangzhou announces the latest wild animal survey results that record 696 species of terrestrial wild vertebrates, occupying 84 percent of the total quantity of Zhejiang. Among them, 144 species are the national key protected wild animals. Mesechinus orientalis, a new animal species, is discovered in the world for the first time, and there are 215 newly-recorded animal species.

Hangzhou systematically protects biodiversity by building 33 nature reserves, 173 sample plots for monitoring, and 21 rescue stations. This survey provides scientific basis for regional ecological conservation. The relevant results will be presented to the world at the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves.
